The Mallard, anas platyrhynchos, is the most familiar and widespread species of dabbling duck bird in Europe, including Britain and Ireland. Mallards are adaptable waders who live happily in tiny ponds in towns and cities as well as in marshes and wetlands in the wider countryside. Males and females are not alike. The male has a distinctive bottle green head, a white collar, purple-brown breast and grey on the wings and underparts. The female has mottled brown plumage. Mallards are sociable ducks. Magpies are, in fact, small crows, and are omnivorous, feeding on carrion, invertebrates, and chicks and eggs.
