Old photograph of a seal at Holm, Orkney Islands, Scotland. St Mary's Holm is a coastal village on Mainland, Orkney. The name Mainland is a corruption of the Old Norse Meginland. Formerly the island was also known as Hrossey meaning Horse Island. The island is sometimes referred to as Pomona, or Pomonia, a name that stems from a sixteenth century mistranslation by George Buchanan and which has rarely been used locally, although it is retained in the name of the Pomona Inn at Finstown in the parish of Firth, as well as a local cafe in the capital of Kirkwall also known as the Pomona.

Tour Scotland Photograph And Video Of The Best Fish And Chips
Tour Scotland photograph of the best Fish and Chips from my hometown of Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. Award winning fish and chips and fresh local seafood have always been synonymous with Anstruther, and the famous Anstruther Fish Bar. Fish and chips became a common meal among the working classes in Scotland as a consequence of the rapid development of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the development of railways which connected the ports to major industrial cities during the second half of the 19th century, which meant that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas.
