Old Photograph Skipness Scotland

Old photograph of Skipness, Kintyre, Scotland. A Scottish village on the east coast of Kintyre in Scotland, a few miles south of Tarbert and facing the Isle of Arran. There is a ruined castle and Kilbrannan Chapel, which contains some rare grave slabs. The estate of Skipness had been in Campbell hands since 1511, when it was given to Archibald, second son of the second Earl of Argyll. The last Campbell laird, Walter, sold it in 1843 to William Fraser, whose son in turn sold it in 1866 to the Grahams, who had made their money in the grocery and wine trade in Glasgow. It remained in Graham hands until 1936.

Old Photograph Bridge Street Ballater Scotland

Old photograph of Bridge Street, Ballater, Royal Deeside, Scotland. In the early 14th century, the area was part of the estates of the Knights of St John, but the settlement did not develop until around 1770; first as a spa resort to accommodate visitors to the Pananich Mineral Well, then later upon the arrival of the railway in 1866 it was visited by many tourists taking advantage of the easier access thus afforded. Balmoral Castle, and Crathie Kirk, the British Royal Family's holiday home and local church, lies approximately 7 miles west, and the family has visited the town frequently since the time of Queen Victoria. Birkhall lies about 2 km south-west of Ballater. Victoria Barracks is used by the Royal Guard for the castle.

Old Photograph The Kelvin Hall Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of people walking outside The Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. The Kelvin Hall stands on the bank of the River Kelvin opposite the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in the West End of Glasgow. The present building dates from 1927. The previous building on the site was originally built as the Industrial Hall, a temporary wooden structure for the 1901 Glasgow International Exhibition at Kelvingrove Park, which burnt down in 1925. The new Kelvin Hall was designed to house large scale exhibitions, but during the Second World War was used to produce barrage and convoy balloons.

Old Photograph Cullen House Castle Moray Scotland

Old photograph of Cullen House Castle, Moray, Scotland. The Castle of Cullen House is reputed to have been built on the site of an old monastery, and dates from before the 13th Century AD. It has an association with the rising of Bonnie Prince Charlie when in 1746 Prince Charlie's army on the march from Aberdeen to Culloden sacked it and many servants were murdered. The principal part of Cullen House was built about 1543 or later. An addition in the east side dates from about 1711 and further additions were made in 1858. The village of Cullen is noted for Cullen Skink a traditional soup made from smoked haddock, milk, potato and onion.
