Tour Scotland Video John Ritchie Stained Glass Window Perth Perthshire


Tour Scotland travel video of the John Ritchie Stained Glass Window in St John's Kirk on ancestry, history visit and trip to Perth, Perthshire. This window, the work of Herbert Hendrie was the gift of Mrs Ritchie, in memory of her husband, John Ritchie, Sheriff Clerk in Perth, who died in 1923. Herbert Hendrie, born 1887, died 1946, was a British stained glass artist. He is known for his strong simple designs with scintillating jewel like effects. Among his best known works are the fifteen windows for Kippen church and the tall stained glass windows for Liverpool Cathedral in England.

The surname as MacRitchie is mainly found in the Highlands, and more usually without " Mac " in Southern Scotland and the English border counties. Early examples include Duncan Richie, a kings messenger in Perth in 1505, John Riche who witnessed an instrument of sasine in Brechin in the same year, and Robert McRichie also known as Makryche, of Glenshee in 1571, whilst Duncan Riche was the king's sheriff of Inverness in the Highlands in 1512. William Ritchie founded the Scotsman newspaper in 1817, and Alexander Ritchie was an Edinburgh artist of repute in the early half of the last century.

Tour Scotland travel video of the Neil Gow Stained Glass Window in St John's Kirk on ancestry, history visit and trip to Perth, Perthshire. This window, the work of Louis Davis, was the gift of Neil Gow, of Perth, in memory of his parents. Louis Davis, born May 1860, died 1941, was an English watercolourist, book illustrator and stained-glass artist. He was active in the Arts and Crafts Movement and Nikolaus Pevsner referred to him as the last of the Pre-Raphaelites. Tour Scotland travel video of the Anderson Stained Glass Window in St John's Kirk on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit and trip to Perth, Perthshire. This window was the gift of Mr John Lennox Anderson, in memory of his wife, Marion Proudfoot Anderson. The first historical reference to a church dedicated to St. John the Baptist in Perth was in 1126, in a grant from King David I.

Tour Scotland Video Shrine Stained Glass Window Perth Perthshire


Tour Scotland travel video of the Shrine Stained Glass Window in St John's Kirk, on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit and trip to Perth, Perthshire. This window, part of the World War 1 memorial, is the work of Morris Meredith Williams, and illustrates the text " And there was war in Heaven ". Morris Meredith Williams, born 1881, died 1973, was a British painter and illustrator. Born in Cowbridge, Wales, Williams studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, England. He married the sculptor Alice Meredith Williams in 1906, and lived in Edinburgh until 1929, when he moved to Devon. Williams worked in landscape and genre painting, stained glass, engraving and illustration. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and at the Royal Scottish Academy. Several works by him are held by museums and galleries in Liverpool. He drew the naval and military figures for the frieze, modeled by his wife, of the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle.
