Old Photographs Durisdeer Scotland

Old photograph of cottages, shop and people in Durisdeer, Scotland. Durisdeer is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland. It is located six miles north of Thornhill, above the Carron Water, a tributary of the Nith. A Roman road once passed through the site of the village, and the remains of a small fort are located to the north-east. The parish church in the village serves Drumlanrig Castle, the 17th century home of the Duke of Queensberry. It was rebuilt by the third Duke in the 1720s, to designs by James Smith. Adjoining the church is the slightly earlier Queensberry Aisle, burial place of the dukes, also by Smith, with a large marble monument to the second Duke, born 1662, died 1711, carved by Jan van Nost. Durisdeer was included in the 1978 version of The Thirty Nine Steps film starring Robert Powell.

Old Photographs Bridge of Orchy Scotland

Old photograph of Bridge of Orchy, Scotland. This Scottish bridge was constructed by Government forces as part of a programme of pacification of the Highland Clans which involved the construction of military roads from the Lowlands into the much wilder upland areas of Scotland. It crosses the River Orchy, one of the finest white-water rivers in the United Kingdom.

Old Photograph Canongate Tolbooth Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of the Canongate Tolbooth, Edinburgh, Scotland. The Canongate is a small district at the heart of Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. The main street running through the area is called Canongate. The street, forms the lower part of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's historic Old Town. Until formal incorporation into Edinburgh in 1856, Canongate was a separate burgh. The easterly end of the Canongate is sometimes regarded as being in the Holyrood area of the city, with the rest being in the Old Town, rather than being considered an area in its own right. The Canongate is named after the canons of Holyrood Abbey and the Scots word gait meaning " road ". The Canongate contains many notable public buildings, including the Museum of Edinburgh and the People's Story Museum, located in the historic Canongate Tolbooth.
