Tour Scotland Photograph Glasgow School of Art

Tour Scotland photograph of Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland. The building was designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the first half of the building was completed in 1899 and the second in 1909. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was Scotland's greatest architect and arguably one of the world's most admired. He had far fewer commissions than his contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright but with a few bold and innovative structures, the Glasgow School of Art and Hill House among them, he had a profound influence on art and architecture at the turn of the twentieth century. Like Wright, Mackintosh designed in totality, down to the furniture and fabrics used in his structures, and he was influenced by the Japanese, particularly in the simplicity of his designs and themes from nature.

Tour Scotland Photograph Hill House Helensburgh

Tour Scotland photograph of Hill House, Helensburgh, Scotland. One of the most famous works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, probably second only to Glasgow School of Art. It was designed and built for the publisher Walter Blackie between 1902 and 1904. In addition to the house itself, Mackintosh also designed most of the interior rooms, furniture and other fixings. Mackintosh's attention to detail even extended to prescribing the colour of cut flowers that the Blackies might place on a table in the living room, so as not to clash with the rest of the decor.
