Tour Scotland Photograph Venison Stall

Tour Scotland photograph of a merchant selling venison at Perth Farmers Market, King Edward Street, Perth, Scotland. Venison can be used to refer to any part of the deer, so long as it can be consumed, including the flesh and internal organs. Venison, much like beef, is categorized into specific cuts, including roast, sirloin, and ribs. The word derives from the Latin venari, to hunt or pursue. This term entered English through Norman in the 11th century, following the Norman invasion of England, and the establishment of Royal Forests.

Tour Scotland Photograph Vegetable Stall

Tour Scotland photograph of a merchant selling organic vegetables at Perth Farmers Market, King Edward Street, Perth, Scotland. Scottish cuisine is the specific set of cooking traditions, practices and cuisines associated with Scotland. It has distinctive attributes and recipes of its own, but shares much with wider British and European cuisine as a result of local and foreign influences, both ancient and modern. Traditional Scottish dishes exist alongside international foodstuffs brought about by migration. Scotland's natural larder of game, dairy products, fish, fruit, and vegetables is the chief factor in traditional Scots cooking, with a high reliance on simplicity and a lack of spices from abroad, as these were historically rare and expensive.

Oatcakes have been documented as existing in Scotland since at least the time of the Roman conquest of Britain in AD 43, and likely before then. Oatcakes have also been described as being the " mainstay of Scottish breads for centuries. " They are prepared with oatmeal as a primary ingredient, and sometimes include the addition of plain or wholemeal flour as well. Oatcakes are cooked on a griddle, or girdle, in Scots, or baked in an oven.

Tour Scotland Photograph Arbroath Smokies

Tour Scotland photograph of a merchant with Arbroath Smokies at Perth Farmers Market, King Edward Street, Perth, Scotland. Arbroath smokies are a type of lightly smoked small haddock with a particularly good flavour and texture. The bright yellow, coarsely flavoured smoked haddock sold in most supermarkets is not a very good substitute for the real thing.
