Due to its position on the Firth of Forth, the beach was used to mount attacks on the nearby 14thcentury Tantallon Castle. During the Napoleonic Wars in 1798, troops were stationed here to prevent French landings. In the 8th century, this area was associated with the Christian missionary St. Baldred.
