It is a wild and remote bay located on the north west coast of the Rhinns of Islay peninsula. While the beach itself features soft sand, the dramatic, rocky coastline is sculpted by the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. During World War II, Saligo Bay played a role in military coastal defence when an RAF radar station was established on the dunes overlooking the bay. The northern end of the bay is distinctly anchored by a prominent rock formation known locally as the Sleeping Giant. The younger generation affectionately refers to it as Pride Rock due to its striking resemblance to the landmark in Disney's The Lion King.
