It is known for its dramatic cliffs, sea stacks, and wild coastal scenery and derives its name from the Old Norse term meaning " bay of wind. " The bay is also deeply tied to local folklore regarding family origins. Because of Orkney's location at the crossroads of early shipping lanes, shipwrecks were frequent. A prominent piece of folklore states that several centuries ago, a foreign ship wrecked in the bay. The sole survivor, a young man who spoke an unknown language, was taken in by the locals. Unable to tell them his name, they simply called him the Windwick giving rise to the localized surname Windwick that exists today. Windwick holds a sad place in British maritime military history due to the Battle of the Orkney Blizzards. On the night of 12 January 1918, during World War I, two Royal Navy destroyers, HMS Opal and HMS Narborough, were on night patrol to the east of Orkney to deter German minelayers. As a sudden violent blizzard blinded the crews, navigating through the treacherous waters became impossible. Both warships misjudged their position and crashed directly into the formidable cliffs of Hesta Head, just north of Windwick Bay. The impact destroyed both vessels, resulting in the tragic loss of 188 lives, with only one single survivor, William Sissons, managing to scale the freezing cliffs.
