Designed by the legendary civil engineer Robert Stevenson and completed in 1816, the grand Gothic tower was intentionally built as an ornate showpiece for the Northern Lighthouse Board. Rather than adopting the strict, functional look of a wave swept rock tower, its unique architecture features medieval style battlements and a defensive appearance heavily influenced by the romantic literary works of Sir Walter Scott.The site itself is home to Scotland's very first lighthouse, a 1636 coal burning beacon known as The Beacon. The 1816 castellated replacement later became the first lighthouse in Scotland to be converted to electricity.
