The original medieval church was dedicated to St Inan, or St Ninian, and was historically known as Kilennan. Records show it existed at least as early as 1296. Built between 1832 and 1834, the present day church was designed by the well known regional Scottish architect Walter Newall. James Clerk Maxwell, born 1831, died 1879, is buried within the ruins of the Old Kirk alongside his wife, Katherine, and his parents. Maxwell’s groundbreaking formulations of electromagnetic radiation directly paved the way for modern technologies like television, radio, and mobile phones, and heavily influenced Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity.
