Dating back to the 13th century, it served as a summer residence and country estate for the powerful Archbishops of St Andrews. Almost the entirety of the vast palace complex has been demolished, leaving only a three storey stone tower. The palace originated under the ownership of the medieval bishops of St Andrews, with early records attributing parts of its early construction to Bishop William Lamberton, who died in 1328. One of the palace's most notorious inhabitants, Cardinal Beaton extensively improved and enlarged the palace in the 1540s before his dramatic murder by Protestant reformers in 1546. On 23 March 1563, Mary, Queen of Scots visited the estate and dined at the Palace. Archbishop John Hamilton the last cleric to reside at the palace fell severely ill with asthma here. He was famously cured by the renowned Italian physician and astrologer Jerome Cardan, who supposedly instructed him to clear his ailment by drinking from a nearby well, now known as Cardan's Well. In 1592, the estate was sold to Robert Melville, and the Palace became the official chief seat of the Melville family. By the late 17th century, George Melville, the 1st Earl of Melville, decided to abandon the aging medieval palace.
