Da Lang Ayre is the longest beach in the Shetland archipelago, stretching between along the remote Atlantic coast of Northmavine. This highly isolated coastal feature is famous for its striking red sand and shingle beach, which is dramatically framed by towering 700 feet high granite cliffs. In the local tongue, " Da " translates to " the ", " Lang " means " long ", and " Ayre " stems from the Old Norse word eyrr, meaning a gravelly or shingle beach. Due to its severe isolation, the area flanking Da Lang Ayre has long been associated with Shetland folklore. Local oral traditions warn of trows, mischievous, subterranean fairy creatures said to inhabit the lonely area.
