The Carnegie surname is of Scottish territorial origin from the old barony of the same name in the parish of Carmyllie, Angus. Famous bearers of the name include: Sir David Carnegie, born 1575, died 1658, created Baron Carnegie in 1616, and Earl of Southesk in 1633, and William Carnegie, seventh Earl of Northesk and rear admiral of the navy, who fought at Trafalgar in 1805, and was elevated to the rank of admiral the following year.
