Main Street in Lower Largo, a picturesque narrow street that serves as the historic spine of this former seatown. Winding tightly along the edge of the Firth of Forth, Main Street is famed for its 17th to 19th century architecture, its deep maritime heritage, and its direct connection to the real life inspiration behind Robinson Crusoe. Lower Largo’s most famous historic son is Alexander Selkirk was born here on this street in 1676. Selkirk was a Scottish sailor who spent more than four years stranded as a castaway on the uninhabited Juan Fernández Islands. His incredible survival story directly inspired Daniel Defoe’s masterpiece novel, Robinson Crusoe. Spanning just inland from Main Street, four massive stone arches carry a grand, disused railway viaduct over the Keil Burn. Built to accommodate the Fife Coast Railway line in 1857, the railway initially brought waves of Victorian tourists to Main Street's beaches. Though the line was shut down in 1965 under the historic Beeching cuts, the viaduct remains the most prominent visual anchor of the village. Because Main Street is so narrow and retains its original medieval, winding layout, it was never designed for modern vehicles so drive carefully. The Fife Coastal Walking Path, which passes through Lower Largo, is a Scottish long distance walking footpath that runs from Kincardine to Newburgh. It runs for 117 miles along the coastline of Fife.
