The Vikings utilized the island's natural, deeply sheltered bay—known as An Acarsaid, or Anchorage, as a strategic base during the 11th century. The name Tanera is believed to derive from Old Norse, translating roughly to " Island of the safe harbour ". In 1784 and 1785, a major herring curing station was established on Tanera Mòr. It quickly grew into one of the busiest fishing hubs in Wester Ross. Powered by the fishing industry, the island's population peaked at nearly 120 residents in the late 19th century. Following the collapse of the Scottish herring fleet and losses from the First World War, the population plummeted.
