Burn O'Vat, an amazing bowl shaped geological gorge feature which was carved out by glacial melt at the end of the last Ice Age. The Vat has a long history as a sanctuary for fugitives. While local legend often mistakenly identifies the famous Rob Roy MacGregor as a former occupant, it was actually his relative, the notorious 17th century bandit Patrick Gilroy MacGregor, known as Gilderoy, who used it as a hideout from authorities. The site became a popular scenic destination in the 19th century after Queen Victoria made the Royal Deeside area fashionable.
