The name " Noss " originates from the Old Norse word snos, meaning " nose, " referring to the distinct nose shaped headland projecting into the North Sea. It was designed by Alan Stevenson, a member of the famous " Lighthouse Stevensons " engineering family and uncle of famed author Robert Louis Stevenson. To aid local families suffering from the Highland potato famine, the Northern Lighthouse Board hired local labourers to construct the access road from Wick. Construction of the tower and complex was carried out by Mr Robert Arnot of Inverness.
