The Tweedies of Drumelzier held the lands from the 14th century and built the stone castle over the old ramparts in the late 15th or early 16th century. They were known as a formidable, aggressive clan at war with their neighbours. Around 1525 the castle was partly destroyed using gunpowder and explosives by the Flemings during a bitter blood feud after John, 2nd Lord Fleming, was murdered by a Tweedie. Tradition holds that Lord Meldred of the hillfort ordered Merlin's death here. The Tweedie name appears in historical records as early as the 13th century, with Finlay de Twydyn rendering homage to Edward I of England in the Ragman Rolls of 1296. By the 17th century, the name established roots in Ulster, Ireland, and later expanded through military and professional branches into England, Canada, and Australia. Clan Tweedie is an armigerous clan, lacking a recognized chief, and is also considered a sept of Clan Fraser.
