King Robert II officially confirmed the estate to Sir John de Danyelstoun in 1373. The famous Protestant reformer visited the estate under the protection of the 5th Earl of Glencairn. Knox performed the world's first Protestant Reformed communion service here. The service took place outdoors under a ancient yew tree. Scotland’s national poet was a close friend and recipient of patronage from James, the 14th Earl of Glencairn. During a stay at Finlaystone House, Burns famously etched his signature into a drawing room window pane using a diamond.
