Scotsman Walking Wearing Kilt By The Windmill On Spring History Visit To East Neuk Of Fife Scotland

The St Monans Windmill overlooking the Firth of Forth. and is the last remaining windmill in Fife and serves as a striking landmark on the Fife Coastal Walking Path. Built in the late 18th century it was not used for milling grain but as a wind powered water pump for the local salt industry. The windmill pumped seawater through wooden pipes into nine nearby salt pans. Locally mined coal was then used to heat the water in these pans until it evaporated, leaving behind valuable salt, often called " white gold.
