The caves here, naturally eroded by waves in post glacial times, have served as natural shelters, sacred chapels, and even smugglers' dens over thousands of years. In the 9th century, the caves became a site for early Christian worship. During the 17th and 18th centuries, cave were used as a prison for accused witches and served as a warehouse for local fishermen and a hideout for smugglers. This is a popular tourist destination situated on the Fife Coastal Walking Path a Scottish long distance walking footpath that runs from Kincardine to Newburgh. It runs for 117 miles along the coastline of Fife and passes through many seaside towns and villages including Anstruther, Cellardyke, Crail, Elie, Lower Largo, Pittenweem, St Andrews and St Monans.
