Dating back more than 5,000 years, constructed between 3700 and 2500 BC, they are among the oldest stone structures in Britain, pre dating both Stonehenge and the Egyptian Pyramids. The cairns were built by early farming communities as communal burial places and ritual sites. While the surrounding landscape is now a desolate moorland of peat bog, it was fertile farmland during the Stone Age.
