Dundee's art college, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design traces its roots back to a School of Art established in 1856 within the High School. In 1888, the Technical Institute (later the Dundee Technical College) was founded, and art instruction became part of its curriculum. A significant donation in 1909 by James Duncan of Jordanstone led to plans for an independent art school, eventually realized in 1953 as the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art.
