An extensive Iron Age settlement, including hut circles and souterrains, underground storage chambers, existed near the loch at Old Kinord. In the 19th century, the loch's water level was lowered, leading to the discovery of several Iron Age logboats, dugout canoes, and other artifacts, including a medieval bronze jug. One of the logboats became known as the " Royal Yacht ". The area around the loch remained a small farming community called Old Kinord into the middle of the 19th century.
