The loch was a vital waterway for the MacDonald clan, who built boats called Birlinns in the Gaskan area and used Eilean Fhianain, an island in the loch, as a burial site for centuries. The ruins of Castle Tioram, dating to the 13th century, are located at the mouth of the River Shiel. The area was also the site of the 1140 Battle of Acharacle, which helped establish the Lord of the Isles dynasty. Loch Shiel is most famously associated with the 1745 Jacobite rising, which began when Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan, at the head of the loch. The loch and its surroundings served as a filming location for the Harry Potter films, most notably as the Black Lake near Hogwarts, especially for scenes in The Goblet of Fire. Autumn leaf color or colour is a phenomenon that affects the normally green leaves of many deciduous trees and shrubs by which they take on, during a few weeks in the Autumn season, various shades of red, yellow, purple, black, orange, pink, magenta, blue and brown.
