Fair Isle has two historic lighthouses, both designed by the Stevenson family and completed in 1892. One lighthouse is located at the northern tip of the island, and the other is at the southern end. Fair Isle is an island located halfway between the Shetland Islands and the Orkney Islands. It is the most remote inhabited island in the United Kingdom. The western coast consists of cliffs of up to 660 feet in height, with Ward Hill at 712 feet being the highest point of the island. On the eastern coast the almost detached headland of Sheep Rock rises to 433 feet in height. On 20 August 1588 the flagship of the Spanish Armada, El Gran Grifón, was shipwrecked in the cove of Stroms Hellier, forcing its 300 sailors to spend six weeks living with the islanders.
