Tod Head Lighthouse was designed by David Alan Stevenson, a prominent engineer from the famous Stevenson family, which was responsible for designing over 90 lighthouses throughout Scotland. The light at Tod Head was first exhibited on December 20, 1897. The lighthouse was converted to electricity in 1973 and was fully automated in 1988, reducing the need for keepers. Following a review of navigation aids, the lighthouse was decommissioned on July 11, 2007, as it was no longer required for general navigation.
