The statue was commissioned by the tenants and servants of Balmoral, Abergeldie, and Birkhall, along with the Queen's household staff from Crathie, to commemorate her 50th year on the throne. It was created by the sculptor Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm and unveiled by Queen Victoria herself on October 6, 1887. Queen Victoria was the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901.
