Autumn Road Trip Drive With Bagpipes Music On History Visit Balvaird Castle Perthshire Scotland

Tour Scotland 4K Autumn travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish bagpipes music, North on the A912 route on ancestry, genealogy, history visit to Balvaird Castle in Perthshire, Britain, United Kingdom. An excellent example of a traditional late medieval Scottish tower house, built around the year 1500 for Sir Andrew Murray, a younger son of the family of Murray of Tullibardine. He acquired the lands of Balvaird in Perthshire through marriage to the heiress Margaret Barclay, a member of a wealthy family. Over the years the castle was extended and altered. A gatehouse was built in 1567. It is located in the Ochil Hills, around three miles South of Abernethy. The name Balvaird is from Baile a' Bhàird, meaning, Township of the Bard, in Scottish Gaelic. Sir Andrew Murray married Margaret Barclay, heiress of the baronies of Arngask and Kippo, which included Balvaird. The marriage, around 1495, was a strategic move to consolidate land. The castle was built on the site of a probable earlier Barclay family stronghold. The Murray family expanded the castle significantly. Courtyard buildings were added around 1567, possibly incorporating earlier structures, and other buildings were added in the early 1600s.
