Legend says that Macduff was ferried across the Firth of Forth from here to escape King Macbeth in the 11th century. n 1373, King Robert II designated Earlsferry a royal burgh, though its original charter was later lost in a fire. A new charter was granted in 1589. The village here was a key stop for pilgrims traveling to St Andrews.
