David Finlay VC, born 29 January 1893 was from Guardbridge. He was the son of a shepherd named George Finlay and his wife Susan Small. He was 22 years old, and a lance corporal in the 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch Royal Highlanders, British Army during the First World War when was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Finlay was later promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was killed in action in Mesopotamia on 21 January 1916 and is remembered on the Basra Memorial. There is a memorial stone in the children's play park in the north end of Guardbridge his home village. Dairsie is a village and parish in north east Fife, located 3 miles from Cupar on the A91 Stirling to St Andrews road which developed principally around the industry of weaving.
