Alexander Ross was born in Kilmaluag around 1812, he emigrated to Australia, with his wife and 5 children. They departed from Liverpool, England on the ship Ontario for Sydney, Australia on 03 August 1852 with over 300 other Scottish migrants. He was among the 39 who died of typhus fever on the voyage to NSW and was buried at sea in 1852. Donald John Macleod was born near Kilmaluag in 1746 and married Catherine Macdonald in 1769, after his wife died in 1801 he emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada in 1803. Margaret MacDonald was born in Kilmaluag around 1786, and marriedJohn Ross in 1808. Kilmaluag, Scottish Gaelic: Cill Moluaig, meaning St. Moluag's Cell, Church or Chapel, is a township made up of several small settlements within the parish of Kilmuir. The Kilmaluag also gives its name to a Jurassic geological formation, the Kilmaluag Formation. This limestone and sandstone formation is Bathonian in age, and outcrops in the harbour of the village and in several other locations on Skye. Kilmaluag is a crofting area where the Gaelic language is still being spoken and taught.
