This was a planned weaving village with traditional Scottish cottages surrounding a village green built in 1776. in 1846 the village had 238 inhabitants, mostly weavers, hence the name Spittalfield. Local people cleared from Redgole and farms round about were given new places to live and took up industry using flax weaving looms in their homes. The laird was a successful lawyer in Edinburgh but he insisted on hearing about everything that was taking place on his estate in Perthshire. Sir Alexander Muir MacKenzie, born 1840, died 1909, was the 3rd Baronet and 6th Laird of Delvine who owned estates around the area of the villages of Caputh and Spittalfield in rural eastern Perthshire in Scotland. The village lies between Caputh and Meikleour, on the A984 road 6 miles east of Dunkeld.
