This is Clann Dònnchaidh country, also known as Clan Robertson, one of the oldest of all Perthshire Highlands clans. The clan's first recognised chief, Donnchadh Reamhar, " Stout Duncan ", son of Andrew de Atholia, Latin for Andrew of Atholl, was a minor landowner and leader of a kingroup around Dunkeld and Birnam in Highland Perthshire, and as legend has it, was an enthusiastic and faithful supporter of King Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence; he is believed to have looked after King Robert after the Battle of Methven in 1306. The clan asserts that Stout Duncan's relatives and followers supported Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in 1314. Birnam is approximately one hour from Glasgow and Edinburgh airports, and two hours from Inverness in the Highlands by car. The A9 is a major road running from central Scotland to Scrabster Harbour, Thurso in the far north, via Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Perth and Inverness. At 273 miles, it is the longest road in Scotland and the fifth longest A road in the United Kingdom. Historically it was the main road between Edinburgh and John o' Groats, and has been called the spine of Scotland.
