Average speed cameras are used on some sections of the A9 to enforce the speed limit. These cameras work in groups of two or more and record the time a vehicle travels between two points; if the vehicle exceeds the speed limit, it will get a speeding ticket. Leaving the A9 at a junction with oncoming traffic can be dangerour and should be done with great care. The A9 is a major road running from the Falkirk council area in central Scotland to Scrabster Harbour, Thurso in the far north, via Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Perth and Inverness in the Highlands. At 273 miles it is the longest road in Scotland and the fifth longest A road in the United Kingdom. Historically it was the main road between Edinburgh and John o' Groats, and has been called the spine of Scotland. The date for astronomical spring is Sunday 20th March, ending on Tuesday 21st June, while by the meteorological calendar, spring will start on Tuesday 1st March.
