Men who died from Tibbermore include; Alexander, Allan, Daniel Allan, James Barclay, Leonard Black, William Blair, Alfred Cooper, James Davidson, John Donaldson, William Dow, Andrew Duff, Frederick Duncan, Louis Gloag, James Hendry, Andrew Irmie, James Key, Robert Hilary Lockhart Whitelaw and William McCann, originally from Ireland, who was just 34 when he was mortally wounded after he surprised, and then killed, six German soldiers in a small border cafe in Luplines not far from the trenches. He was nicknamed The Lion of Louplines after the incident, which took place less than two months after he had landed in France with his regiment, the 2nd Royal Dublin Fusiliers. William was born on March 29, 1880, in Balbriggan, a small town in Fingal County, some 15 miles north of Dublin. He worked for a few years as a post office engineer before enlisting in 1901. He later became a reservist, qualifying for his 6d a day pay, which augmented his wages. He met and married a local domestic servant, Jane Band, on November 4, 1910.
