The poet Robert Burns spent a Summer in Kirkoswald in 1775, when he was about 16, said to be with his grandparents to learn mathematics from schoolmaster Hugh Rodger at a a school in the village. The mother of Robet Burns, Agnes Broun, was born and raised in Kirkoswald. Hugh Rodger was born in 1725. His parents were John Roger and Mary Bogdan. He married Helen McWilliam in 1763 in Girvan. They had at least 6 children that died young that are interred with Hugh and Helen. Hugh died in May 1797.
