This area was a stronghold of the Douglas family then the Crawford Family, and then the Rutherfords. William Douglas born 1425 was the eldest son of James Douglas, 7th Earl of Douglas, and Beatrice Sinclair, the daughter of Henry Sinclair, Earl of Orkney. The A823 road winds north and then west through the lower glen, never far from the river, and with some stunning views to take in, not least into upper Glen Devon as the road finally leaves the river and turns north over the pass into upper Glen Eagles.
