Eagle And Salmon Pictish Symbol Stone With Music On History Visit To Edinburgh Scotland

Tour Scotland 4K short travel video clip of a Pictish Symbol Stone with an Eagle and Salmon carving on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to the National Museum in Edinburgh. The eagle was known for wisdom, long life, swiftness, strength and keen sight. The salmon was known for being able to exist in both salt and fresh water and to return to its spawning grounds. Animals, birds and fish are carved mainly, but not exclusively, on what are known as Class 1 Pictish Symbol Stones. The word Pict comes from the Roman name Picti, meaning “ painted people ” and it is traditionally thought to refer to the practice of tattooing or body painting. This term was first used around 1,700 years ago and was developed to distinguish between Roman and non-Roman Britons during the time of the Roman occupation of the British Isles. It has subsequently come to refer to a group of people who lived in what is now Scotland. This tradition of carving endured for centuries, with Pictish symbols being added onto Christian sculptures. From AD 900 onwards, the Pictish kingdom and its rulers were replaced by people who no longer regarded themselves as Picts, but as people of Alba, the precursor to what we call Scotland. The rulers and nobles of this new kingdom mainly traced their lineages back to Ireland, not Pictland.
