Largs' most famous monument is The Pencil, situated at the south end of the Prom, near to Largs Marina. The Pencil was built in 1912, to commemorate the Battle of Largs 1263, when the Scots defeated King Haco of Norway's troops on the shore at Largs, after the 160 long ships got caught in a storm. On 12 July 1912, the battle was commemorated at Largs with the unveiling of a newly built stone tower. Popularly known as The Pencil, this 70 feet tall, pencil shaped, conical roofed tower is built out of ashlar blocks of whinstone. Constructed by architect James Sandyford Kay at the cost of nearly £300, The tower was modelled after mediaeval round towers at Abernethy in Perthshire and Brechin in Angus. The Pencil stands about 1 mile South of Largs. overlooking the local marina. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
