Tour Scotland Spring 4 short travel clip video of the Signal Tower on ancestry visit to Arbroath, Angus, Britain, United Kingdom. Originally built in 1813, and designed by Robert Stevenson, it was used as a base of operations for the famous Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Signal Tower housed the families of the keepers stationed on the rock, along with the vital shore staff who ran the tender. The name Signal Tower comes from the signalling apparatus installed atop of the tower building that was used to communicate between the shore staff, the Master Of The Tender, and the keepers of the lighthouse. An identical set of signalling apparatus is installed atop the lighthouse itself. Installed within the Signal Tower was a small observatory outfitted with a powerful telescope; it was through this telescope that the signalling apparatus on the lighthouse was monitored during the day. Robert Stevenson, born June 8, 1772, in Glasgow, died July 12, 1850, in Edinburgh, was a civil engineer who in 1797 succeeded his stepfather, Thomas Smith, as a member of the Scottish Lighthouse Board. In that capacity until 1843, he designed and built lighthouses and invented intermittent and flashing lights as well as the hydrophore, an instrument for obtaining specimens from water. He wrote Account of the Bell Rock Lighthouse, the famous lighthouse that he built in collaboration with John Rennie on an isolated site, the first such in Scotland. Three of Stevenson’s sons, Alan, David, and Thomas, were associated with him in the practice of engineering; Thomas was the father of the writer Robert Louis Stevenson. Arbroath is located 98 miles North East of Glasgow, 50 miles South West of Aberdeen and 77 miles from Edinburgh and 17 miles North East of Dundee. Neighbouring villages include St Vigeans, Carmyllie, Friockheim, Colliston and Inverkeilor. The date for astronomical Spring is 20th March, ending on 21st June, while by the meteorological calendar, Spring starts on 1st March.
