Tour Scotland 4K Spring travel video, with Scottish music, of Cortachy Castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Angus, formerly known as Forfar or Forfarshire. This Scottish castle has been the home of the Ogilvy family and the seat of the Earls of Airlie ever since the time the family moved here in 1639 when the Airlie Castle was burned down. The first castle on this site was built in1330 by the Stewart Earls of Strathearn. In 1473, King James III granted the lands to Sir Walter Ogilvy who probably began the current structure. The castle and its surrounding estate were bought by Lord Ogilvy from a kinsman in 1625 and his son, the first Earl of Airlie moved there from Airlie Castle. Since then Cortachy has been the home of the Ogilvies. The clan tartan is a blue and green check with an over-check of red. The earliest structures of the castle, the south wing, date from the 16th century. Three original round towers, one with a rectangular watch room at the top, corbelled-out on a W-shaped support can be seen today. The Ogilvy surname is a habitational name from a place near Glamis, in county of Angus, Gaelic: Aonghas, present day region of Tayside, which is first recorded around1205 in the form Ogilvin. The root of the place name is thought to be from the Welsh " uchel ," meaning " high ." Gilbert, son of Gillebride, 1st Earl of Angus, obtained a charter of the lands of Purin, Ogguluin and Kynmethan, in Angus between 1172 and 1177. Gilbert is also on record as a witness of a grant of the church of Monyfode to the Abbey of Arbroath by his brother, Gilchrist, 3rd Earl of Angys between 1201 and 1204. There is also early record of an Alexander de Oggoluin, who had a Charter of the lands of Belauht around 1232. Patrick Oggelville or Eggilvyn, of county Forfar, swore an oath of allegiance to King Edward the 1st of England in 1296. Spelling variations of this family name include: Ogilvie, Ogilvy, Oguilvie, Ogilby, Ogleby and many more. Notable amongst the Clan was Saint John Ogilvie, born 1579, died 1615, a Jesuit priest, and a cadet of Ogilvy of Findlater, who was arrested and hanged at Glasgow Cross for his defence of the spiritual supremacy of the papacy. He was beatified. James Ogilvy, aged 33, a carpenter, arrived in South Australia in 1855 aboard the ship Telegraph; Ann Ogilvy, a British settler travelled from London aboard the ship Sandford arriving in Auckland, New Zealand on 9th July 1856; Walter Ogilvy, a British settler travelled from London aboard the ship Sandford arriving in Auckland, New Zealand on 9th July 1856; James Ogilvy, arrived in Virginia, America, in 1666; Henry Ogilvy, settled in St. Kitts in 1716, George Ogilvy arrived in Maryland, America, in 1756; Alexander Ogilvy landed in America in 1790. The surname Airlie is of Anglo Saxon origin. It was name for a male who was of manly character. The surname Airlie originally derived from the Old English word Eorlic which referred to one who displayed manly characteristics.
