Tour Scotland 4K short travel video clip, with Scottish music, of Hopetoun House on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to South Queensferry near Edinburgh. In the Outlander series it's the residence of the fictional Duke of Sandringham, Simon Callow. The house was built between 1699 and 1701 and designed by Sir William Bruce. The house was then extended from 1721 by William Adam until his death in 1748, being one of his most notable projects. The Hope family acquired the land in the 17th century. Charles Hope, the first occupant, was only 16 years old when his mother, Lady Margaret Hope, signed the contract for building with William Bruce, on 28 September 1698. The master mason is noted as Tobias Bachope of Alloa. The plumber and glazier was John Forster of Berwick. The house is set in 100 acres of rolling parkland including fine woodland walks, the red deer park, the Spring garden with a profusion of wild flowers, and numerous picturesque picnic spots. Hopetoun has been home of the Earls of Hopetoun, later created Marquesses of Linlithgow, since it was built in 1699 and in 1974 a charitable trust was created to preserve the house with its historic contents and surrounding landscape for the benefit of the public for all time. The title of Marquess of Linlithgow was created in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1902 for the 7th Earl of Hopetoun, the first Governor-General of Australia. His son would later serve as Viceroy of India. The Marquess holds the subsidiary titles of Earl of Hopetoun; Viscount Aithrie ; Lord Hope; and Baron Niddry.
