Tour Scotland travel video clip, with Scottish music, of the Windhouse on ancestry, genealogy, history visit to the Island of Yell, one of the Shetland Islands. Built in 1707, the now ruined stone building of Windhouse is claimed as the most haunted house in Shetland. The original name of the house was Windås meaning built on a windy rocky ridge. In 1880, when Windhouse was renovated, skeletons were found under the floor of the building and there is also a story of a servant girl who mounts invisible steps and a ghost dog, and a lady dressed in silk who is believed to be the spirit of a woman whose skeleton was found under floorboards of the main stairs. Former laird's house, original L-plan house at centre comprising symmetrical dormered single storey and attic 3-bay principal block with projecting crenellated porch, single storey 2-bay wing to rear, forming L-plan, square-plan single storey single bay crenellated wings flanking principal block, lean-to additions in-filling re-entrant angles flanking rear wing. Harled walls with droved sandstone ashlar and concrete dressings and details. 18th century haas are rare survivors in Shetland, and although Windhouse has been substantially extended and is in a ruinous state, it still retains much evidence of the early house.
