Island Of Westray On History Visit To The Orkney Islands Of Scotland

Westray constituted a major family estate during the saga period. Large scale excavations of Viking and Norse period sites have been undertaken at Tuquoy, Quoygrew and Langskaill in recent years. Each of these was the site of a Viking-Norse settlement. Pierowall village on Westray is the island's largest settlement and lies near its northern end, around Pierowall Bay. With an area of 18.2 square miles, it is the sixth largest of the Orkney Islands. The island's main industries are fishing, fish farming and cattle farming. Tourism is also important to the island economy. William Gray was the oldest known child of William Gray and Barbara Allan, and was christened in the parish of Westray on 18th January 1806.
