Beacon Tower Above Berriedale On Visit To East Coast Of Caithness North Highlands Of Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video clip, with Scottish music, of a Beacon Tower above Berriedale, Scottish Gaelic: Bearghdal, a small estate village on visit to the East Coast of Caithness in the North Highlands. A navigation beacon on the Caithness coast located a quarter of a mile south of Berriedale village. Known as a Duke's Candlestick it is traditionally associated with the Duke of Portland, the owner of the Langwell Estate on which they stand, although it is thought to date from the early 19th century which would pre date the Duke of Portland's ownership by some years. The purpose was undoubtedly to guide fishing boats into Berriedale harbour. Berriedale is located at the end of the eighth stage of the coastal John o' Groats Trail. Berriedale is listed as the place of death on the death certificate of Prince George, Duke of Kent, younger brother of King George VI. He was killed in a fatal air crash nearby on 25 August 1942, alongside 14 others. Berriedale is on the A9 road between Helmsdale and Lybster, close to the boundary between Caithness and Sutherland. It is sheltered from the North Sea. All photographs are copyright of Sandy Stevenson, Tour Scotland, and may not be used without permission.
