Spring Drive A822 Military Road Highland Perthshire Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video of a road trip drive on the A822 road, with Scottish music, to and through The Sma Glen on ancestry visit through Highland Perthshire, Britain, United Kingdom. Following the old military road, the A822 reaches the village of Amulree. Beyond Amulree the A822 begins to head more determinedly East along the route of another military road. After several fairly tight twists as the road follows the river downhill, the A822 finally emerges from the scenic Strathbraan into Strathtay. After a new cutting to ease the route for lorries, and passing under the main northern railway line, the road joins the A9. The A822 was one of the traditional drove roads along which cattle could be moved on the hoof. It linked Highland and Lowland Scotland. The Sma Glen is a modern name one for originally it was known as An Caol Ghleann, The Narrow Glen. Bonnie Prince Charlie marched through the glen on his way to the infamous massacre at Culloden in 1746. In the 18th century General Wade built a military road through the glen. King Malcolm III of Scotland also marched through the glen to recover his kingdom from the usurper Macbeth. The Romans even built a fort and watchtower at Fendoch.
