Old photograph of the Thomas the Rhymer tower beside a cottage in Earlston, Berwickshire, Scotland. Thomas the Rhymer was born 1220 as Thomas Learmont of Ercildoune, in the village now called Earlston in the Scottish Borders. He was a Scottish laird and reputed prophet also sometimes called " True Thomas " supposedly because he could not tell a lie. Popular lore recounts how he prophesied many great events in Scottish history, including the death of King Alexander III of Scotland. On the southern edge of the village there are the remains of an old keep dating back to the 1400s, called " Rhymer's Tower " because they are believed to stand on the site of the castle originally built by Thomas the Rhymer.
